Fortress of Stillness
Hostel for Artists in Frioul
Context In today’s cities, rapid rhythms, sensory overload, visual noise, and intrusive advertising constantly stimulate and distort our perception of reality. Spaces that allow silence, focus, and introspection have become rare. This project proposes an artistic-spiritual retreat, a place where artists and creative minds can withdraw from the overstimulation of urban life and rediscover clarity, sensitivity, and inspiration.
Site The project is located at Batterie de Caveaux, a former military turret on Frioul Island, 4 km southwest of Marseille. Built for defense, destroyed and rebuilt several times, it was abandoned in 1944 after the Allied attack. The traces of reconstruction and layered materials make it a unique palimpsest of memory and matter. Its defensive origin produced a fragmented plan and disconnected spaces, yet its isolation now offers the most open view toward the Mediterranean. The project embraces this paradox — a solitary yet beautiful fortress — as the foundation for a new chapter of creative life.
Concept Within this setting of historical silence and vast seascape, Batterie de Caveaux is reimagined as a space where artists can free themselves and explore imagination. Each cell of the fortress becomes an autonomous studio, while new interventions reconnect them into a subtle network of light and passage. Independent yet belonging to the same whole, artists can work in solitude while sensing the presence of others — a metaphor for art itself.
